Marcel Weiss focuses on this aspect of Boulez through the testimony of composers and performers who benefited from his teaching.

In addition to being a composer, conductor, music theorist, founder of musical institutions, his role of teacher has taken many forms: at the College de France from 1976 to 1995), analysis in Darmstadt (1955-1960), analysis, composition and conducting in Basel (1960-1966), analysis at Harvard (1963), conducting in Lucerne (since 2004) among the most important. Often distrustful of conventional teaching, Boulez is credited with transmitting a certain sense of modernity - trying to lead his students to discovery through applied analysis of musical works and sparking their own insights into the future.
